1. What is Kinesiology?

Kinesiology is a technique used to locate imbalances in your key body systems. These include the digestive tract, the respiratory system and the nervous system. As these systems are intrinsically linked, the knock-on effects of an uncorrected imbalance in any area can be far-reaching and significant.

Through the use of non-intrusive manual muscle-testing, Kinesiology identifies imbalances in your body and also supports and enhances your body’s natural ability to heal itself.

Kinesiologists are like "health detectives"; they uncover the root of your health problems. When we can pinpoint the cause of your problem, we can give the body the required tools to heal itself naturally.

2. How do we get ill?

No-one has absolutely perfect health. Health is far more than the absence of illness—although it can be that too! Good health is a feeling of true energy and vitality, an efficient, comfortable (and quiet!) digestion, sharp memory, mental clarity, a strong immune system … the list goes on!

The analogy I often use to explain this to clients is that of a jigsaw puzzle. Jigsaws usually have a number of smaller ‘pictures’ within the big picture – just like our bodies are made up of different organs and systems. When we are born, we may have genetic/constitutional weaknesses – missing pieces of our health jigsaw. A concentrated section may be “muddled” or missing a piece or two and this may result in common childhood issues such as a weak immune system, digestive problems, asthma and/or allergies. We can also have a pre-disposition to conditions that often don't present until adulthood eg arthritis

Little pieces of the ‘body jigsaw’ can become displaced or distorted due to the stressors of modern life. These stressors come from many sources such as processed and refined foods, the environment (including modern technology), infections, physical illnesses, modern medicines—particularly antibiotics—and heavy metals such as mercury in amalgam fillings.

The body often does a great job at compensating. However, at certain times, the picture can become more distorted ie when we simply have 'too much happening at once'; little pieces of the ‘body jigsaw puzzle’ can go missing or one large piece might get knocked out of place. This may be caused by bereavement, infection, significant work/life stress or numerous other factors. As we know, many things have the potential to be ‘the straw that breaks the camel’s back’ and send us into a downward spiral.

The resultant effect on our bodies can surface in a number of symptomatic ways such as fatigue, joint pain, headaches and so on. We also notice when a particular system or body function becomes sluggish or ineffective; for example, irritable bowel syndrome (digestive system) or anxiety/depression (nervous system).

Kinesiology can effectively identify the weak areas. Nutrition and balancing techniques can replace and rejuvenate those jigsaw pieces and help your body to heal itself.

Although it does tend to be human nature to wait until a crisis happens, it’s a good idea to maintain your health by having regular check-ups (look on it as a health MOT). Supporting the body early on in this way can 'nip problems in the bud' and significantly lower the risk of genetic weaknesses—eg arthritis or heart problems—turning into full-blown crises that impinge on your fulfilment and enjoyment of life.

4. What will I need to do?

For optimum results, it is vital that we work in partnership and that you take responsibility for following the recommended programme.

This means that you need to adopt any dietary changes, take nutritional supplements and, occasionally, do quick balancing exercises.

The level of commitment required from you will depend on how out-of-balance your body is. I do the initial detective work to establish your key imbalances and then recommend a recovery programme. This will be easy to follow if you are truly ready to get well.

The small amount of effort required can result in huge steps toward feeling great!

5. Does any one react badly to Kinesiology?

Kinesiology is non-invasive and safe but, very occasionally, the remedies and balancing techniques may trigger a fast detoxification or energy shift. Current problems might worsen, or you might experience headaches, tiredness, flu-like symptoms or diarrhoea. This is usually very brief—approximately 2-3 days.

Clients are always encouraged to get in touch if they have any concerns about symptoms they are experiencing.

6. If I am sceptical about Kinesiology, will it still work?

Yes. Scepticism is natural and welcome when experiencing energy medicine for the first time—even I, as a practitioner, am sceptical at times. However, Kinesiology repeatedly proves its worth in helping me find the information to get clients well.

It is a fantastic tool that enables me to get right to the root of the problem. Resistance, however, can block accurate results. So, if you are determined to prove it doesn't work, you are probably not ready for this approach.

It is important to focus on the outcome (getting relief from your health problems) rather than the process. 'The proof of the pudding is in the eating' as they say!

7. What is involved in the treatment?

Initially, we will have a free telephone discussion to see how Kinesiology can help you. From this, we will have a clear understanding of your situation. You will then be sent a health and lifestyle questionnaire and a food diary. These are to be returned to me prior to the session.

As everyone is unique with a distinct set of issues, the focus of treatment is tailored to individual needs.

I advise you to wear loose, comfortable clothing. Trousers are preferable to skirts and you will not need to remove any clothing. Usually, the initial consultation lasts about 2 hours although there are several options for starters. See our prices page.

We explore all the things that can affect your overall balance and then, by working through the questionnaires, we pinpoint areas for treatment and investigation. You will experience Kinesiology through a 14-muscle balance and some screening to highlight the priorities.

A small programme of nutritional supplements and dietary adjustments may be given. This is a great way of balancing and preparing your body for positive change.

In the next session (about 1 hour), we use muscle-testing and do further screening to really focus on the areas of your body that may be out of balance.

Classical Kinesiology uses a variety of Kinesiology techniques to pinpoint and prioritise the areas needing attention.

Acupuncture points are also used, as are test vials to establish the body's reaction to foods, toxins and known allergens. Click here for a full explanation.

8. Can Kinesiology be used for food sensitivity testing?

Yes. However, please note that food sensitivity is different to food allergy. With a food allergy, the body exhibits a detectable immune response to an allergen. Reactions usually include an outward sign, for example inflammation, swelling or skin rashes.

Food sensitivities can be more subtle or hidden and don’t usually get picked up on clinical tests. However, they are equally unpleasant and just as disruptive to your health and well-being. Symptoms may include stomach-bloating, skin rashes, mood swings, headaches and tiredness.

Kinesiology can help tremendously with identifying and reducing food allergies and food sensitivities. It is often appropriate to include food-sensitivity testing within the initial assessment.

There is also an option to have food-sensitivity testing with digestive assessment as an initial assessment. This takes 1½ hours and can be a great starting point to improve your diet and nutrition. I test approximately 120 different substances, 85 of which are foods; the rest are environmental substances.

I can also test specific products you eat or use if you suspect they may be upsetting your system.

9. How many sessions will I need?

This is difficult to answer because it depends on the ‘problem’ and how long you’ve had it. As a guide, your first review is usually 4-6 weeks after the initial consultation. The majority of clients report significant improvements at this stage. See Testimonials

As your condition improves, the gap between sessions widens. Each session, tailored to your individual needs, means finding the unique combination of balancing techniques and nutritional support for your body at this time.

It is worth remembering that, just as the body can take many years to get out of balance, it can take time to reset and restore your body’s own extraordinary self-healing powers.

This is more difficult if any of the main stressors remain present. As it is not always possible or practical to change certain aspects of your lifestyle such as your work, stress, shift patterns or modern-day toxins, we have to work with and around these.

You will feel the benefits and know you are heading in the right direction in the first 4-6 weeks!

"Once I had decided to get serious about getting well and changing my damaging ways I started to notice changes in my mood and general feeling of wellbeing. Pauline has helped me focus on what is important. She has worked her magic on me and I am feeling better already.  I can't wait to start feeling even better as time goes on and look forward to a happier, healthier life. Thank you, Pauline."

10. Can you work with me if I am seeing a doctor about the same problem?

Yes, I can. My original professional background was within conventional medicine. I respect and value the contribution of all my medical and complementary colleagues. None of us have all the answers, but our own bodies do!

Clinical tests can be vital for identifying and ruling out specific conditions that will influence my approach. My role is to support the client and respect their decision. Often, when people are on medication or having surgery, nutrients and balancing techniques can be excellent at supporting their body, thus minimising the risk of negative side-effects. Equally, I will be honest if I feel there will be any limitation or conflict by combining the two. Please do speak with me about your specific situation.

As a Kinesiologist, I do not diagnose in the medical sense. Instead, I identify and help correct energy imbalances which may be causing or exacerbating your health problems.
